Role of K+-Cl--cotranspoter in the Arachidonic Acid-induced Stimulation of Melanin Synthesis in B16 Melanoma Cells
Lee Yong-Soo

Abstract
The effect of arachidonic acid (AA) on melanogenesis was investigated in B16 melanoma cells. AA induced melanogenesis and K+ efflux in a dose-dependent manner, which was significantly inhibited by DIOA, a specific inhibitor of K+-Cl--cotransporter (KCC). These effects of AA were not altered by inhibitors of cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase. Treatment with ETYA, a non-metabolizable analog of AA induced the same effects as AA did. Taken together, these results suggest that AA itself induced melanogenesis, and that KCC may mediate the effects of AA.
